It depends on the media player you're planning on using. The new media player has to have a built in feature that will import the playlist from the old media player. Check source if you want more help.

MEDIA PLAYERS DO NOT HAVE FILES - THEY ALL IMPORT SPECIFIC TYPE OF FILE(S) FROM CERTAIN LOCATION(S) OR SEARCH FOR THEM THROUGHOUT COMPUTER SO YOU CAN NOT TRANSFER FILE(S) FROM ONE MEDIA PLAYER TO ANOTHER - JUST OPEN ANY MEDIA PLAYER AND IMPORT FILE(S) FROM LOCATION(S) MEANS FOLDER(S) OR LET COMPUTER SEARCH FOR SPECIFIC FILE(S) ON HARD DRIVE OR ANY DRIVE
if you download new version of same player than it is still the same player only new version of it and in that case process is mostly always automatic - player knows what to do and what to play - same player new version ONLY

Well, let's see...
If you have an AVI or whatever, you can play it in multiple Media Players, including QuickTime, Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player, and Nero ShowTime. No transcoding or anything necessary to change or transfer. If you have an MPEG or whatever it can also be played in any of those. Windows Media Player will tell you it cannot play an MPEG, but if you tell it to try anyway, it should work just fine. Tried it on my laptop, didn't have QuickTime or Nero on it.
