Most Red-ears raised in typical set-ups do not lay fertile eggs- in part because it is difficult to provide good nesting sites.

The best success comes from things like:
- Outdoor ponds with large land areas around them
- A special breeding tank called the 'Waterland Tub'
- A very large tank with a tub of soil/sand mix set up so the turtle can access it.
