A semester is half the school year, usually 15 weeks plus a week for final exams. I'm not sure what you mean by the rest of your question. Credits are usually more important once you are IN college than they are in the admissions process, unless you are transferring from a community college or bringing some college or AP courses with you from high school. Credits, also called units, have to do with the number of hours you spent on the course. For example, at most semester-system schools (I won't confuse you by telling you the other systems), most courses are worth 3 units or credits. That means that you spent 3 hours a week in class over the course of the 15-week semester. A normal class load is about 15 units or credits, so you would be taking 5 classes, each of which would meet for 3 hours/week.

Each year in college is divided into two semesters (approx 15 weeks in length). You can acquire credits in high school before entering into college by taking advanced placement (AP) tests or other advanced classes. However, these credits are not required for the admission into a college, they are more so helpful for when you are already enrolled. GPA is a (typically) 4.0 grading scale that colleges use in the application process to evaluate a potential student.

Smesters are about 14-16 weeks long depending on the school. Credits are used for determing course loads for determing if you're a full time student or if you're receiving fincial aid. They usally tell you how many hours the class meets per week. A 3 cr course usally meets 3 hrs per week, etc. GPA is based on points just like in high school. Most colleges use the 4.0 scale.

A semester is usually 15 weeks long. And GPA is based on points. A 4.0 is like all A's, 3.0 is all B's, etc.
