Clay isn't the best substance for a substrate. The particles are so small, they never completely settle and make the water cloudy, plus the size allows them to compact together so tightly, there's practically no circulation of water, nutrients, or oxygen to the plant's roots. You're better off to use something with a larger particle size like sand or gravel, or one of the substrates made especially for plants.

Copperhead is right, I don't see having a clay substrate being a good idea. The clay won't be good for the root systems of the plants, and like he said the small particles won't want to settle and make your tank cloudy. Another problem I could see is that the clay particles could get built up in the filter, leading to having problems with your filter in the future. I would stick to sand, gravel, or special substrate made for plants. Good luck.
