Here is a very good resource, especially for students and debaters:

For the views of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops on the death penalty (who are strongly pro life) you can visit
http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/national/deathpenalty/

You will find that it is much harder to defend the death penalty if you are supposed to base your arguments on credible information and on the practical side of the death penalty system.

In regards to the death penalty, a "right to life" can be defined as a right for any person to not have their life taken away except in instances of defense when the lives of others are in immediate and substantial danger. Once a person is in jail, they are no longer a threat to society, thus there is no reason to take their life except as a form of societal vengeance. Whether this social vengeance is any different than mob murder I suppose will depend on whether one is for or against the death penalty.

I do not include punishment or deterrence as legitimate reasons for having a death penalty because death does not allow the accused to learn his lesson, and the deterrence effect of the death penalty is questionable at best. (States with the death penalty actually tend to have slightly higher murder rates than those without.)

Right to life mainly refers to the life of an unborn (innocent) baby. Death penalty is just that, a penalty for crimes committed.

BTW..I'm not pro death penalty

I dont know if i am drifting a bit but...

if a person is a threat to the nation then they should be executed.. As long as though they are found guilty and there is cold evidence of there actions.

The 'right to life' definition means life is a God-given gift and we should allow God to take it in His time, not ours.

"Right to life" is the intrinsic right of every living thing to live freely.
It is not up to anyone else whether you should live or die. They shouldn't have power over another's being and consciousness.
