The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver explores the importance of family through each character’s individual experiences with finding a group of people to with which they connect. The need for a supporting family and reliance on others is extremely crucial to the characters’ development over extent the novel.

Go ahead and improve it. There is no writer that does not need an editor.
