I've never heard of an aluminum penny....
But if you drop one of each on a table, they should make different sounds! Look at the side, on a quarter you can see the layer of copper between the layers of nickel. Maybe you would be able to see an aluminum layer between the copper layers!?

Yes it looks like nickel or has a flat silver color. There were 1,579,324 1974 aluminum none were placed in circulation and one was preserved in the Smithsonian. The government says the rest were destroyed. None have shown up for they were never officially issued and the secret service would confiscate it. There have been roomers of a few out there. No weight is listed but it must be lighter than a copper one, which is 3.11 grams

I'm assuming you are talking about an American penny. In 1982, I believe, pennies began to be made from zinc alloy with a copper wash. Unless it has something which would interest a collector, such as a mis-strike, or the like, it is worth a penny. I am not familiar with aluminum pennies, but if they exist, they should be lighter than a copper one. In WW II (1943), pennies were made of steel, and are of interest to collectors. Good luck!

Again assuming this is a U.S. cent (the US doesn't make pennies).
According to redbook: between .25 cents and $1 but it would have to be in perfect condition and red (not brown).
As previously mentioned the alloy of the Lincoln cent changed in 1982 from copper to a copper coated zinc alloy. As your coin predates 1982 it's a copper.

Actually the actual coin is less than 1p today. The value of a penny in 1974 is about 4p today.
