lifting 4 days a week, is the best fat reduction that he can do. A new study just came out that says that strength training is just as effective as cardio training. I am 6 ft 3, and I lift 4 days a week, and I run 12 miles a week, and i weigh 250 pounds, with just 9 % body fat. Tell him not to eat past 6 in the evening. A year ago I weighed over 300 pounds and had over a 35% body fat. I used the program that I just gave you, and it has changed my life. Good luck.

To answer the previous question, unless he's looking to put on a ton of muscle, he doesn't need a protein shake. They're very high in calories, and if he doesn't burn off those extra calories, they'll just be stored as fat.
On to the current question, definitely encourage him to do cardio. At least 30 minutes 4-5 times a week. Anything to get his heart rate up is good, so whatever he likes to do. Recent studies have suggested that doing weight training after cardio increases your post-workout metabolism. So, if he does 30 minutes of cardio and then does some weight training, his muscles will burn fat longer after his workout. As far as reps and how much weight, that depends entirely on his goals. Fewer reps with larger weight will obviously help him build muscle. Once he gets the body he wants, then he can switch to higher reps with less weight if he doesn't want to put on any more "mass." But, I'd stick to 6-8 reps of whatever weight he can do that many times. That'll help him build the muscle he needs as a good base to start burning more fat. Just make sure he eats a good diet with a lot of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein. He should be able to get enough protein from his diet, so he shouldn't need shakes to supplement.

Cytogainer is the best tasting meal replacement protein shake. ONLY DO THE CHOCOLATE... (the rest are icky)
Make sure he has many meals (but small). Yes, he needs cardio, but he needs to push the weights too. As a general rule it's high rep low weight for long lean muscles, and high weight low rep for bulgier muscles.

Cardio is a great way to loose the extra fat! Also if he has a chubby stomach, he should do ab exercises one of the best ones is laying down on your back with your hands on the side of your head and then bring your legs up to a 45 degree angle and start moving them like you are riding a bike, when the right leg comes forward touch the left elbow to the right knee and so on...
Hope this helps!

Is his goal to be bulk muscular, or ripped muscular? To be bulk, he needs a high protein intake and lift heavy weights and cardio for the gut.
If he is looking for ripped, high protein, less weight , but more reps, and cardio for the gut.

How lucky you are to have a hubby that cares about his health! Muscle Milk is a protein shake that is good for what he is looking for. You can go to GNC or VitaWorld and ask them, and possibly get samples or one serving cans so that he can taste them, to find out which ones he can stand. Good luck!
