I've got involved in a internet startup and their site could eventually get very large and employ 10 developers quite easily.

Any ideas which open-source language would be best and why?

e.g. PHP, Ruby on Rails, Java, Perl...?

Everyone has their own preferences for languages.

PHP is very popular, and there are loads of people who can write it, but some purists don't regard it as a "proper" programming language.

Java is really an enterprise-level technology. If you've just got a couple of developers to start off with, it probably isn't appropriate.

Ruby on Rails is getting a lot of publicity these days - but your developers would probably have to learn a whole new language.

Another option is one of the new Python frameworks. Python is a language that a lot of people know, at least to a basic level, and frameworks like Django are the same sort of idea as Rails is to Ruby. Django is becoming increasingly popular - there are some very large sites starting to use it.

Go for the PHP and MySQL combo. It is one of the most tried and proven solutions for all kinds of websites, large or small.

Ruby does look promising though, but I know very little about it.
