There is nothing wrong with being vegetarian when pregnant. So long as your friend is taking vitamin supplements in iron etc to make up for what she is not eating in meat she should be fine. Vegetarians have babies all the time without having to change their diet... there is a lot of protein in vegetables and pulses and nuts... She really should discuss with her dr as well though... but no it shouldnt affect the baby :-)

I would defently have her talk to her doctor. I was a vegan ( NO animal products, no cheese, no milk, no meat, etc., ) and my doctor had me get back on a regular diet.

I'm sure she won't have to go back to eating a lot of meat ( if any at all ) cause there are so many other ways to get the nutrients she needs. But just makes sure that she is watching very carefully what she does eat and she is not cheeating herself, or her baby out of anything.

You could have her start a daily food diary right now so that way when she goes to the doctor she can take it and the doctor will have a better understanding of what her diet is and that way can give her better adivse!

Well I'm not a doctor but whenever you take something out of your diet (meat) you need to replace the vitamins and nutrients from that with something else... I'm due in 2 weeks and since I got pregnant, meat totally disgusts me. I started drinking lots of milk and eating soy, cheese, nuts, beans. Anything with a lot of protein and iron in it. The doctor will do a blood test and if her iron is low she will prescribe her some iron pills. She should really let the doctor know about her diet and ask her doctor what kind of vitamin supplements she sould be taking.

She'll be fine. Alot of vegetarians get pregnant. The question is, though, is she a VEGAN or a vegetarian. If she is a vegan, there could be some increased risk of protien deficientcies in pregnancy but if she eats eggs and cheese and milk etc along with a diet of tofu and beans, she and her baby should be fine.

I am vegetarian (16 years now) and I was pregnant with TWINS.

They are 2 now but when I was pregnant I had pretty much no problems with anything. No morning sickness even. Who knows, it might even be better for the baby.

By babies when to 38 weeks and weighed 6lb 1oz, and 7lb 10oz. If you know anything about twins... well... that is HUGE. So unless she has something else going on, I see no reason for this to effect the baby.

vegetarians live longer, so how could it be bad as long as she gets the nutrients.

this isnt to say she wont crave it, she probably will. lol.

She doesn't need to start eating meat. She can get protein form a number of other sources such as: nuts, legumes, soy products, and protein enriched foods. If she is a vegetarian and not vegan she can also use whey for extra protein. You can have a healthy vegetarian pregnancy. You just have to make you are getting adequate nutrients.

I am also a vegetarian and pregnant. As long as your friend is eating a healthy, balanced diet there is no need to eat meat. She should see a doctor and make sure that her siet is healthy and if not the doctor can make suggestions and prescribe vitamins to supply missing nutrients.

A woman can go thru a pregnancy without eating meat. How about some peanut-butter, nuts, beans, tofu. There are many sources of protein. She should go over that with the doc to make sure she is getting enough. Trust me it can be done.

she doesn't need to eat meat.

"the American Dietetic Association, the largest association of nutritional professionals in the world, has asserted that "[w]ell-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence." This is based on research dating back 20 years showing that vegetarian and vegan diets can support healthy pregnancies and healthy children. "
