Actually, having chewed my fair share of gum as a child AND left it on the bedpost overnight, I can categorically say that it DOES NOT lose it's flavour...it actually tastes a bit more strongly of the original flavour after not being chewed for awhile.
I remember going to sleep one time with the gum still in my mouth. I woke up around midnight to realize that the gum had fallen out of my mouth, and gotten caught in my hair at the side of my head. Since I had waist length curls, you can imagine the mess it made. I went crying to my mother (who was on her way to bed).
And I can also remember standing in the kitchen, not making a peep while she worked with an old rag and turpentine to loosen every bit of it and ease it out. (She HAD threatened to cut it out when she saw the clumpy mess of it, but I cried so piteously that she relented.) I was about eight years old at the time.

Actually, I remember storing mine on the bedpost overnight, and if it's Wrigleys, it doesn't lose it's flavor at all. It's just hard and it takes several chews to get it warmed up enough to be soft again. I guess that releases the flavor.
Gross, I can't believe I did that!!

Most of the gum that I did chew lost its flavor long before it made it to the bedpost. It is a cute song!

That was a cute song, mom used to tell be about her doing that. Now gum loses it flavor a couple minutes after you start chewing it and the sugarfree get to tough to chew.

Well my Nicorettes' don't. I save the piece overnight and stick
it on top of my bottled water. And it's ready to go the next
morning. I know, it sounds yukky, but when you have to figure
that these cost mucho dinero they aren't to be wasted. And
if I need to get a chew during the night when I get up, it's
handy to reach for. LOL

This question is deep. It belongs in the science thread.
Our government will probably pay some scientist good money to find the answer.
I had forgotten as a kid I put my gum on the bed post. Gag.

I've never thought about that, but I do know that wood really soaks up furniture polish....maybe it soaks the moisture which contains the flavor into the wood of the bedpost...hummm... Just plain air, has a way of drying things out too....interesting question.

No, it's just as tasty (perhaps moreso) as when you took it out of your mouth -- course if you put it on the bedpost, it would be tastier and take on the flavor of whatever was there before you stuck it down.

The air gets to the gum, it loses its flavor, because of all the bacteria in it from our mouth, & then it's ready for the trash can.
