Encourage them to make at least minor decisions for themselves. Make sure that they have rights as individuals such as when to bathe, eat, have visitors etc. Encourage them to do as much for themselves as possible when it comes to picking out clothes, deciding what activities to do and trying to dress themselves.

By looking at each person as an individual....what are there likes and dislikes,by allowing them to do as much as they can for them selves,always getting the staff to offer choice.
By allowing them to speak and not be spoken over and respected for their different cultures and beliefs.
Also by reassesing guidleines for each of them on a regular basis to ensure changes are monitored,e;g medication etc as this can have an affect on them.

If I ever have to live in one of those places, I would want to make all my own decisions. I would never want some director or nurse or anyone else telling me what I can or can't do.

I would want to come and go as I please.

I would want privacy.

I would want my dignity respected.
