DEFINITELY NOT. IF HISPANICS WANT TO LIVE HERE LET THEM LEARN ENGLISH. WHY SHOULD I LEARN A LANGUAGE THAT I MAY USE ONCE A WEEK OR A MONTH.

No, because if we became a 2 language nation, all of our papers would be in both Spanish and English. Most countries create a national language, why not the US. The US is the only country without an official language.

I don't think the U.S. should have any official language. Of course, it would be convenient if we all spoke one language. Left on its own, the global marketplace and the Internet are doing enough towards that goal, and English appears to be the language of choice for most people who want to tap into the widest amount of information and commerce and opportunity.

This is likely to continue regardless of what the U.S. Congress pronounces, which would be largely symbolic anyways (most of the heated debates about bilingual education for example are state/local matters).

Nevertheless, for Congress to proclaim one or more official languages would likely be seen as hostility towards people who happen to have other native languages. Rather than encouraging them to learn English it might provoke them NOT to do so (reverse psychology probably works well here), and would lead to bad feelings all around. This would apply not just to U.S. residents but foreigners as well.

For over 200 years the U.S. has been a nation based on noble ideas, rather than the morally neutral sentimental things like language, culture, ethnicity, and father/motherland that define almost all other nations. Having no official language reinforces the idea that the U.S. is about something much more important, much more forward-looking; I'd be disappointed to move away from that even a bit.

This is an English speaking nation. If people want to come live and work here, they need to learn English.

If I moved to another country and they spoke something other than English, I would make every effort to learn the language. I would not expect the entire country to change for me or other English speaking peoples because we were too lazy or too stubborn to learn the language.

How could we become a 2 official language country if we can't even read, write or speak English correctly? I speak both of these languages (English/Español) but doubt that it will become official. Many commercials and other things are already in both languages i.e. lables, ect so why do we need to make it official anyway? I am all for every American learning more that one language just like in most European countries but we must first master English!

p.s. it's Spanish not Spenish!!!!!

DEFINITELY NOT!! Why should we have to completely change our way of life, not to mention spending MILLIONS of company AND federal dollars to transform this country (more than it already has) to be bilingual? Absolutely not. There are so many other things like health care, education, and our troops, that need the money so much more.
If they want to come to our country and join our economy and enjoy our civil liberties, then the LEAST they should do is learn OUR language. NOT the other way around. Our country was fine before they started pouring in by the millions and it will be fine, if not better, if they stop due to language barriers. Which unfortunately they won't, but that's besides the point.

No...and the best example I can give you is ...a housefire. I was present when a building full of non english speaking Haitians caught on fire. It was impossible for us to ask if anyone was inside...to move the cars away from the building...so much that made it harder to help. English should be the main language and as I cited is very important for all non english to learn here in case of emergency.

Surely the ultimate objective should be to have just one global language.

It would make no sense for the USA to have two official languages.

If you go down that route then what happens to the Italians, Poles, and all the other minority groups in the USA ? Let people speak whatever they wish in their own homes but only English for official purposes.

I'm not in favor of any country establishing an official language....The more languages anyone learns the better.....whats the advantage of limiting yourself to only one language.
