My mother and father's side of the family have very opposite political views.

My mother's side of the family is heavily liberal Democrat. My father's side of the family is conservative Republican.

I'm conservative on most issues.

You might find this interesting:

A professor recently released a book that studied partisan trends between children and their parents. Amongst other things, the studies have found that about 80 percent of children adopt the same political views as their parents. This is interesting because conservatives are having more babies than liberals. The study noted that on average, every 100 liberals are having 147 children. Also, every 100 conservatives are averaging 208 children.

Basically this means that children who will overwhelmingly adopt conservative views are simply outgrowing the future liberal population at an enormous pace.

If these trends continue, the studies suggest that even California will be a conservative state by 2020.

Anyway, just some food for thought! Good luck!

Not quite, but we're similar. My mom is a rock ribbed conservative, my dad is pretty conservative but somewhat more moderate. I'm a Libertarian, and I think my dad influenced that deeply. We've often discussed moral and ethical ideology as seen in the works of people such as Locke, JS Mill, Jefferson, Thurgood Marshall, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. He's a lawyer, I'm an engineer, we both take politics seriously, and we're both well read. My mom is more of a reactionary, and she and I disagree on quite a few points. But my dad and I have a lot of fun with our discussions, even if we don't always agree.

My parents were an enormous influence on my left-wing political beliefs, although my Dad has moved slightly to the right in recent years.

No. My dad is a Conservative, and my mom does not pay any attention to politics unless it's for the Presidential election. My dad with vote strictly Republican and my mom straight Democrat. That's the reason I started learning. I just couldn't understand not knowing what the other candidates had to say.

Personally, I don't. But I suspect if a study were done it would show that the overwhelming majority of us vote the same way as our parents did. What we learn as infants through puberty is very powerful to our beliefs.

No. My dad voted for Bush twice but is disgusted with him now. He is supporting Ron Paul.
My mom is up in the air in terms of who she supports. She's crafty. My dad is very into politics though.
I voted for Bush once. I voted Libertarian in the next presidential election. Now I'm voting for Dennis Kucinich. I'm voting with my conscience. I'm more politically like my dad's side of the family. They are highly educated and tend to be liberal and democratic. I have learned a lot because when I do see them, there is always some lively debate or discussion. I love it. My dad is usually opposite. I do get to see both sides to a certain degree.
I try to see both sides but I am definitely leaning left these days. I hope Dennis Kucinich wins. I like his ideas the best.

Yes, and this is the single most indicator of what party someone will join - most people have the same political beliefs as their parents.

I am conservative. And no I do not. My mother is also conservative and my father is liberal. Ironically I married a man who is just like my dad, same views and all as my father. LMAO
During the last election I wanted to put two signs in our yard and put wife on one and husband on the other and he flipped out. Was worried one of his union buddies would see it. Go figure. So worried about what others thot. LOL
