1. Houses take too much land, and that means that natural habitat is destroyed along with farmland.
2. Houses have lawns and landscapes that use up water and are often treated with chemicals that seep into the groundwater or run off into streams.
3. There have to be roads to the houses, water lines buried, electricity and natural gas supplied, and so on. All of these disrupt the natural habitat.
4. Moving people into a natural area causes more air pollution from cars, more noise pollution from daily life, more erosion from disrupting the soil, and more litter everywhere.
5. Families have cats and dogs that kill songbirds and other wildlife.

ecolink is right I would add that more roads and rooftops add to the heat island effect in cities as well. And noise pollution can be an issue.
