I agree with you to never put cereal in the bottle. I heard that it makes it much harder for babies to digest it that way. I never did it. I did put juice in a bottle with my daughter but I didn't let her go to sleep with it so her teeth wouldn't rot. However, despite what books and other people say sometimes going with your gut instinct is best because you can see what's best for your baby firsthand.

Cereal in bottles is a new thing, it was only in the past 50 years or so. Before that, people didn't do that.
Now that babies have been studied and it's been found that they literally cannot digest cereal at such a young age, it's again no longer recommended.
Unfortunately, there's still a holdover from the 1950s and 60s of cereal in the bottle. Lots of people do it, and lots of kids are also obese and have health problems later in life, it's not a coincidence. It will take another generation before people stop doing it again.
Babies don't need it (the only exception is a bad reflux problem, although it's probably a better idea to get a prescription med for reflux than to give baby something their digestive system can't process.) Babies lack the enzyme needed to digest cereal so early. It's a choking hazard, it tricks the baby into bypassing their natural stopping point (creating a lifetime of food problems.)
Cereal so young can sensitize a baby to allergies and other digestive problems later in life. We now know the long term implications of feeding cereal in a bottle (which presupposes that the child is too young to be fed with a spoon) and we know it's harmful.
I would never put a solid into a bottle.

Hey- I am a pediatric nurse and my husband is a pediatrician. I haven't ever heard that. We recommend for people to put cereal in the bottle all the time- usually for reflux or spitting up issues. (You just have to make sure you cross cut the nipple so it will come out easier.) We never recommend to put a lot- just enough to help with the spitting. There is so much junk out there to tell you what to do and what not to do- some of it is crazy. The best thing to do is ask your pediatrician.

I am a firm believer in cereal in bottles. Baby is growing and needs more and more nutrition. Sometimes formula isn't enough. I wouldn't put juice in a bottle. If they are old enough for juice they are old enough for sippie. Sometimes what mother's know best isn't in a book or a website.

I would not put rice cereal in the bottle. It can lead to obesity later in life. However, it is sometimes suggested to treat certain conditions. Talk to your pediatrician about what is right for your child!
