What is wrong with being single and not looking?

Most likely it's because most people are insecure about themselves and their own self-worth, so they latch onto another person that they think will "complete" them or give them a sense of purpose. Unfortunately, those people make things difficult for all of the confident people in this world who are comfortable being by themselves (or who just have high standards). Good luck in your unwilling battle against people's ridiculous expectations and assumptions!

PS I linked to an article in the NY Times I just read about this very subject!

Because people can be dumb and judgemental...

There's some "plot" against simply being un-married or single in this society. Everyone just assumes that if you're not "dating" or looking for some kind of permanent relationship - you're bitter, miserable, and alone. Which is *SO* not the case.

There's nothing wrong with being single & not looking...

There is nothing wrong with being single and not being obsessed with having good looks. Unfortunately, our society puts an emphasis upon women being somehow successful and fulfilled only if they obsess over their looks, finding and keeping a man, having babies, etc. You may not be a lesbian, but people who categorize you want to make you feel like you have to conform to a "social norm" that they understand. Don't let them get to you; there is so much more you can do with your life other than spend it chasing after a relationship you don't need.

Hmm. I get that quite often, too. I suppose many feel that single people cannot be happy.

There's nothing wrong with being single and not looking. Actually, even if there was something wrong with it, I'd still not change!

That's childish on their part. There is nothing wrong with being single. Relationships to me are VERY stressful!

I was accused of the same thing once. I think they just like to gossip and try to make trouble. There is nothing wrong with not wanting a relationship until you are ready for one.

Who are the people who assume this? I bet they are married. They are married and can't stand the fact that your single and don't have to answer to someone. So if your not insecure about yourself like they are, there must be something else. Ahh, your a lesbian.

Don't sweat it. You know who you are. Those are haters, homophobes and miserable married people.

When I was in the military I used to frequent libraries over dating on leave and my friends thought I was gay. The upside, I acquired a world of knowledge by reading, I don't owe a mess of child support and didn't catch diseases. I never did see a downside.
