My mood swings and emotions become so extreme right before my cycle. I'm talking full blown crying fits and feelings of hopelessness and severe agitation. I never had these symptoms until about a year ago. I have also noticed that my level, in general, of energy has completely decreased. Is this a hormonal thing? What is changing in my body?

I would go & get a check-up with your doc. & have some blood work done. It sounds like there is a definite shift in your hormones changing but it also could be your thyroid, especially the lack of energy.

It's normal for hormones to start changing in late 30's to 40's, even if menopause is still a long way off.

Talk with your doctor about it. There are ways to treat extreme PMS.

Since your noticing it at or around the time of your period I would say yes that it's hormonal. However, your doctor is the only one to confirm this. Seeing you gave an age it's possible that your in "Pre" menopause. You may notice a lot of things changing. Length of your period, terrible PMS, depression, heavier periods etc. Talk with your OB/GYN there is medication to help either in Pre-Menopause phase or during actual Menopause.

It could be early menopause, maybe you are exhausted mentally because of raising children. Hopefully all that anxiety is not just worry about being 40+. But also get it checked out in case it is something more serious, it could be worse and because of your age everyone says it is perimenopause. Hope all goes well.

Your body is transitioning into menopause. You should see a physician, he may prescribe hormones which will ease the onset of menopause. On the positive side, you will not have to deal with a monthly period any longer.

As Nancy said, your getting ready for menopause.

Talk to your doctor about this, they can give you meds to help you with this.

St. Johns Wort is over the counter and a good herbal to combat these side effects.
