I bought a beautiful handmade skirt from a store that imports clothes from India. It's a typical Indian skirt, with embroidery and embellishments, but it REEKS of either gasoline or some other sort of petrochemical product. I'm washing it as we speak, but I wonder what on earth that smell is, and why does this beautiful skirt smell this way? This isn't the first time I've noticed this sort of thing, but it's the first time since I've discovered Yahoo answers!

you people are all wrong, its the Indian dyes used in the clothing. Indian clothes are cheap garbage and to keep the price down they use petroleum based dyes that have kerosene in them as a base. Since the Kerosene is in the dyes it will never come out of your clothes. Indian clothing is also made by slaves and the fabrics are crap as well.If you buy a Garment from India the smell will permeate your whole closet. The fabrics are also bad for your skin and can also catch fire. Dont buy clothes from India.

My guess is they were using it as a pesticide, or it was next to fuel barrels in the hold of the ship. I had a blouse that never did smell right, and of course they would not take it back after I had washed it.
