Is this a solid front axle or independent suspension with cv shafts going from the front diff. to each front wheel?. I believe they'd already gone to independent in which case you should examine the cv boots for tears and replace if necassary. You should also check the axle seals and make sure they are not leaking.( A fairly common problem) check the fluid level on the front diff by removing the check plug on the drivers side of the diff, about half way up the case. I would also jack up the front wheels and check for play by grabbing the top and bottom of the tire and try to move the tire up and down to check the hub bearings and ball joints. There should be no movement. When you change oil be sure to grease the front end while your at it. Every place you find a grease cert. Also, be sure to check the fluid level in the transfer case and check the driveshaft u-joints to for looseness. That should about cover it.
