Traditionally the first anniversary is "paper". Tickets to a play or concert (or a game) work for that. A particular book or edition of a book. If he has a favorite team in whichever sport, a set of cards of the players. That's if you care about the "paper" theme.

My wife somehow missed out on getting her college diploma -- she had received a small plaque, but since she took her final credits elsewhere (in another state) and transferred them back and never bothered with commencement, she never got the actual document. I filed with the college and got a copy, had it framed. This was a birthday gift some years ago, and conditions were right for me to get such a thing. She liked it, and it was about as personal as possible.

Maybe a framed picture, poster, lithograph, or portrait, of a favorite subject or by a favorite artist/photographer. Could be of you. Could be excitingly personal of you -- there are very talented and discreet photographers out there who will well understand what you're looking to do.

My husband was very happy with his favorite meal and dessert. He's very easy to please, for which I am grateful.
