(Was posted yesterday night, but figured re-doing it today would get more exposure)

I never got the lump (about dime-sized) checked out, due to it never changing size, or causing pain (just very mild discomfort if it's hit directly). Anyways, a few days ago, it suddenly started hurting, even with slight touch, and the redness has increased since. Any clue what might be going on? (I have already scheduled a doctor app, but it's not until Nov. 6th, so I'm curious!)

I forgot to mention....the lump itself has been there for YEARS, that's what I mean when I say 'old'.
I don't think it's a ''boil'', since what I've read about them is "A boil generally starts as a reddened, tender area. Over time, the area becomes firm and hard." I've had the firm & hard lump for years before any tenderness occurred.
I don't think it's a simple ''ingrown hair'', either. The area seems too large for something like that. (dime-size)

I'm not sure what it is, but try doing hot compresses 10-15 mins at time several times a day until your appt. If it is an ingrown something or a massive zit it might bring it to the surface.

I once had a fiberglass splinter in my foot that I didn't notice. It became a hard lump and I had it for over a year. Then it suddenly became red and inflamed because the splinter was finally working its way out. It when it came out it had a hard casing around it that looked like a big sesame seed.

I also had an ingrown hair on my side that caused a lump like that. It was big, too. I didn't think it could possibly be an ingrown hair because the lump was so big, but it was. The dermatologist removed it for me without any problems.

I had a lump on my back for years and it never bothered me and then last December it got red and starting hurting. It ended up being a cyst. The doctor went in and removed it and I haven't had any problems or lumps since. It sounds a lot like what you have and the lump looks similar to mine.

You could have a cyst that's absessing.
