Emotionally alone is very common, and the word "lonely" is a description of an emotional feeling (not a physical one).

Quick answer: being lonely must be something more than simply being alone. It could be a feeling, an outlook, a sense of meaninglessness. You can experience this alone or in a crowded room.

I personally feel loneliness is a sense of meaninglessness or of "feeling alone" in the world - not fitting in, feeling like a stranger, etc.

Figure it out. Think like a computer network. Is the reason why a computer is not running on the network significant enough that it stays off line? No. It is better staying on the network so that it can be used as a resource in the network. This is the truth behind why you are never alone. The stupid world has become a stupid computer network. And the stupid people of the stupid world have become computer network engineers, and stupid resouce managers and certified nerds.

Loneliness is a state of mind which goes much deeper than the fact that one has never been alone. It's a very powerful feeling and feelings simply do whatever they do.
