and all the stuff about the medicines are b/c of overdoses... it's not that it isn't safe.. its just that the parents don't call the doctor to see how much to give them.

None. They have all been pulled off the shelves. The FDA says that cold and cough medicine is not effective for any child under the age of 6. However, they have not pulled the medicines for kids 2 to 6 years of age. Also they say risks of complications from medicines are higher in babies 0 to 2, but they have proved that is from overdosing, not the medicines themselves. Confusing, no?
:)
Here is what I would do.
Try a humidifier and saline in the nose, those two things will help break up the stuff in the chest. Good luck!
If that doesn't work, call your doctor and they can prescribe something!

Look for medication that contains the least amount of medical ingredients -and all of those ingredients should only treat the symptoms your baby has.
So don't treat sinus congestions if the baby isn't very stuffy.
Look for medication without a fever reducer. Fever is good for the baby and can be treated separately if needed.
Do not give ANY antihistamines. Most infant remedies contain antihistamines to make the baby sleep. Antihistamines are the most controversial medication and there is more evidence that they do harm than with most other drugs. Antihistamines should only be used to treat ALLERGIC reactions -not cough, cold, or flu.

I`m agreeing with Kiddo,
ignore the horrible remarks, you can`t beat good old vicks vapour rub!!!
snuffle babe is a not so strong varient that is specially for young children, the plug in vapourisers are great too for un blocking stuffy noses, calpol make one thats suitable from birth so not too strong.
When mine were stuffed up these thing always helped and if babes really miserable i would`nt think twice about giving a 2.5ml dose of calpol (it is suitable from 2 months now)
Good luck and hope baby`s better soon

Instead of cough medicine, try steam. Turn the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom reading to your baby while your little one breathes steam. Place a folded towel or pillow under the crib mattress to elevate baby's head and even though this may sound strange, let baby sleep with the window open (if safe to do so). My pediatrician suggested all of these ideas and they work.

Call your pediatrician. Most pediatricians can not recommend anyhting anymore though due to recent studies that cold medicines don't help kids under the age of 6. They suggest using a vaporizer, steamy shower, vicks baby vapor rub on the chest.

ok all of you nasty people who are being rude....enough already. She is obviously concerned about her baby and has probably tried everything she can think of to help make baby well.
To answer your question, I always used vicks vapor rub for babies on my daughter when she was little. Something else that helped was the pediacare plug ins. Warning...they stink like vicks, but work wonders. I have also heard that it works wonders if you put vicks vapor rub on the bottom of the baby's feet (or yours for that matter) and put socks on, it will ease the symptoms by morning. I've never tried it though.
Good luck and I hope your little one feels better. Remember to make sure baby drinks enough fluids so they don't dehydrate and all the coughing has probably made a sore throat.

For a cough that's not constant with no fever I would say nothing serious but no there's nothing you can give her but maybe run a humidifier in her room.

Nothing! Babies that young shouldn't have any of that stuff! Warm baths, warm mist humidifier in the room, use that gross nose sucker thing - it's icky but it works. And try to elevate the crib mattress a little. Fold a blanket and lay it underneath the mattress (not too high or she'll slide down). Then prepare for some sleepless nights until your little one feels better. The worst of it usually lasts 2, maybe 3 days.
