Smithsonian Institute. Specially if I had the time!

Capitol Hill. Just to see it and be in it - all that history surrounding you at once!

Guggenheim Museum, New York city.

Charleston, South Carolina. Walk of city with Civil War emphasis - including the 54th Massachussetts battle, surrender of the city, etc.

Key West, Southernmost Point in the USA.

I had a chance to visit the Gettysburg site, a few years back. I still regret that I only had a few hours to spend there. I had time to take a guided, bus tour, which proved a very good way to get an overview of the site, and a brief history of the battle.

But, in passing, I reaized how much I had to miss because of my brief visit. Given the time and money, I could see myself spending, at least, a full week, walking the monuments, touching the walls of the, still living, city where this tremendous loss of life occured. Gettysburg was a turning point in the war, and a watershed moment in this nation's history.

It is a unique place, where, both, the losers and the victors, in battle, are honored for their sacrafice, each side fighting for what they all believed was a "just" cause.

My second choice would be to visit all the buildings of the Smithsonian, and, the National Air and Space Museum. I have a deep, amateur interest in the sciences.

The Lincoln Memorial - because it is such a symbol of freedom for this country.

Independence Hall in Philadelphia - because that was where our country was born

Jamestown, Virginia - to understand the first europeans who came here

Ellis Island, New York - to understand the many waves of immigrants who came to this country.

Cherokee, North Carolina - for a reminder that someone was already here.

Battle sites don't do it for me as much, but I do agree about Gettysburg.
