In the same manner that 2000 ended a millenium and a century and a decade on the Gregorian calendar. In the same way that 5 years ago was the dawn of the 47th century on the Chinese calendar. No one can tell in difference between 2012 and 2013, in other words.

That all depends on what you mean by the 'end of our age'. The Mayan calender could refer to changes of the world of that time, a revolution of sorts. Or you could take it literally, and say it refers to the actual end of the world. This again depends on your perception, and of you religious beliefs.

No, it's just a false date that man devised. God will"end the world" in his own time. There may be politicians and religions that will try to do what they can during that time to make it"true" though.

Nostradamus also said something about this date, but no, I don't believe anything extraordinary will happen that year. I do hope my cousin's child will make it to the Olympics that year.
