Before you all say stuff like its illegal in usa, or they cannot be tamed or anything on the subject. i live in Nova scotia, Canada and am wondering where the hell i could possibly get a pet fox, If its bred in captivity then i might not have so many problems with it as everybody claims.

Foxes do not make good pets. Even if raised from newborn kits. They have a tendency to revert to their wild instincts and will turn on you as they get older. During breeding season they will grow rambunctious and dangerous. If they get rabies, they cannot be treated for their is no fox vaccine. And if they are let outside for any freedom they will run away and come back to you only for food. Raising a fox can cause him to have mental and physical illnesses. Not to mention they have a terribly strong odor.

See if you can contact any fox farms and ask if they sell very young cubs to people as pets.

The ones being bred for docility are able to be house trained, but these are multi generational breedings done for calmness and people orientation. I met a guy whose family raises foxes, even after the bottom fell out of the fur market, they kept up to see if they could breed a calm one. All the kids in his family had a pet fox.

Unfortunately, if you do get one and it bites someone, the fox's rabies vaccination won't prevent the animal from being confiscated by the authorities--they don't grant 'wildlife' leeway like they do dogs, and there's not enough research on the rabies vaccine to know if it does work in foxes (they're vulpes, not canines). You'd have to find a vet willing to work with wildlife, I believe they have to be registered specially to be able to work for that, as foxes aren't 'exotics', they're 'wildlife'.

You can try wildlife rescue centers, but usually they have professionals who try to help injured wildlife even if they are just kits. Are you looking to care for this animal as a true lover of foxes or are you just looking for something cute. You should really look into the temperaments of foxes before getting hung up on the idea. They aren't all that fun. My step father had a pet skunk that didn't have a sent gland any longer. It was a pain to deal with and I don't wish that on anyone.

A fox wouldnt be happy as a pet - it is a wild creature - dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, mice can appreciate being a pet - but not foxes. A fox only has one life - & it wants to live wild! good luck.

Foxes are not pets; they are wild animals and nothing will get that instinct out of them. Besides, do you really want to do that to one of them? Keep it in your house? YOU might enjoy it but would the fox? You're not exactly thinking of the fox's best interests, are you? Sounds more like ego to me.

If you are so crazy about foxes, spend some time volunteering at a wildlife rescue organization. Educate yourself about how much work is involved and the requirements needed (financial and vet-wise as well). The rescue organization will be grateful for the help and you will go into it with your eyes wide open. Have the patience and maturity to do it the right way and educate yourself first. Remember, if you lose your job and don't have the necessary funds to keep a fox, or decide you can't deal with it (for WHATEVER reason), it's cruel and unfair to then dump the fox - either in the wild, or on a rescue organization. Such organizations already have their hands full due to foolish people who want an exotic pet - then dump them when they get too big or their teeth or claws are too sharp. There is a REASON keeping wildlife is discouraged - it's for the benefit of the animals!
