London, Oct.27 : Painting a zebra crossing across a street or thoroughfare should in the normal course not cost much, but in Britain, a mind boggling 114,000 pounds is spent on each of these pedestrian crossings.

Of the 114,000 pounds, 11,000 pounds is for 'design work'. A further 16,000 pounds is spent on beacons, electrical wiring and road signs, while the balance 87,000 pounds is earmarked for labour costs.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said the £103,000 to construct the crossing includes traffic management whilst the crossing is under construction, drainage, excavation of existing pavement, disposal of material, new kerbing and paving, anti-skid surfacing, road markings and studs, new traffic signs, electrical connection and supply pillars and new signal heads and poles. Probably all by different sub-contractors.

particularly when the firm that paints them belongs to a local councilor. we had a similar con a couple of years ago. two months before i was due for my council flat to be double glazed, a couple of guys came round with (and i kid you not) a giant roll of sellotape and stated that the council sent them round to draught proof the existing windows. i pointed out that it wouldnt be worth it because they would be replaced in two months, but the assured me it wouldnt take 5 minutes and cost nothing. so i thought AH!! well ok . and i let them do it. they were exactly 17 minutes doing it. when they finnished they gave me a form and said, sign this please. on the form it had the cost to the council. £165.00 for 17 minutes and a roll of wide selotape. they were doing every house and flat in the area. turned out it was the brother of a councilor. and he could have the contract because he lived outside of the area. (as per council rules) shows you how they fiddle the rules and make fortunes from the public council tax gravy train eh!! i can just hear the councilors speach now. I AM HAPPY TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF!!etc etc happy to serve your bloody self more like it...... this councilors brother two! months later also! put in my double glazing.... oh!! i forgot to tell you. because i refused to sign it, thinking it outragouse for a reel of sellotape. the council threatend to take me to court.

How in the world can it cost £114,000 to make a cross walk?

I guess it's like the $10,000 hammers in the US, eh?

That's nothing! Where I live they have recently cancelled some plans for major roadworks in the town. It has cost the taxpayer £30,000 to NOT do the roadworks!

How does it cost £30,000 to not do something? This country has gone mad!

Bad resource management. Some one has clearly found a 'nice little earner'.
