Today's announcement that the pound sterling is at a 26 year high against the US$ (it is now well over $2 to the £) reminded me that, when I was a child, (many years ago, I am Very Old Person) the rule of thumb was always $3 to the pound. Do you think we'll get there again ?

Hey, I must have misremembered, because enough of you remember a $4 pound for me to start doubting myself. Perhaps it was $4 in my lifetime.

Michael, that's fascinating about the Chinese paying for oil in € ! They really have a maverick approach to currency, the renmimbi for foreign trade and the yuan for domestic use (or is it the other way round?)

My old man use to call 5 bob a dollar. When years later I asked why? He told me because their used to be 4 to the pound. At that time, it was hard to believe. The Chinese are bank rolling the US if they switch to the euro. Then it'll be sooner than you think. They buy oil from Iran in euros. So is that why they have put sanctions on Iranian banks?
