No, dont turn it off ..... the overdrive button will improve your gas mileage ..... if you want to improve your gas mileage, drive as liitle over 55 mph as possible, keep your car unloaded (no excess weight in the trunk), drive as smooth as possible (dont gun it and then slam on the brakes) be gentle on the gas peddle, and make sure you keep your tires properly inflated ....... = )

NO!
Do this-watch the tachometer while driving at 50 mph or higher, and shut down the overdrive. The higher the rpm's, the more fuel you are using.
Why is there a switch to turn off overdrive?
When hauling heavy loads, with the overdrive ON and when taking off from a stop, there is a lot of stress on fairly thin parts in the transmission-turning the overdrive light off causes the load to shift to a little beefier parts. upon initial acceleration

Over drive lowers the ratio below 1:1 so you get better gas milage. Shutting it off would keep you from that extra gear.
If you are in town with alot of stop and go driving then you can shut it off. It may help because you're not wasting power by shifting into overdrive and then back down to drive.

The gas mileage listed for a motor vehicle is a EPA anticipated mileage. In different words exams have been run on that kind of motor vehicle and the gas mileage for highway and city driving, those numbers are anticipated and are there to grant you someone-friendly thought of what variety of mileage it may desire to get. Your rather mileage will selection and that's greater or below the anticipated quantities. as an occasion my ninety 9 Monte Carlo became into EPA rated 19 MPG city and that i generally have been given 25 miles city in horrendous site visitors situations. Alot of it is going to return right down to the way you force, in case you in basic terms force it undemanding you will consistently get greater suited mileage than in the experience that your consistently pedal to the metallic everywhere you circulate.

No, overdrive is for fuel economy. To disable or turn it off would cause the car to use more gas. Your transmission has 4 gears,1 -2 -3 -4. when the car engages 4th gear this is overdrive and this is when the torque converter locks up. this action turns the automatic transmission into a manual transmission which has no torque slippage.
1st gear is for takeoffs, this is the highest gear ratio. In simple terms, for ever 1 turn of the engine, the transmission output turns about 1/3 as much.
2nd gear is for acceleration or passing. the transmission turns about 2/3 as much as the engine.
3rd gear is known as direct drive. the engine and transmission turn at about the same rate.
4th gear is for fuel economy. this is when the engine turns less than the transmission output. it will be about 1 1/3 time as much as the engine.

Actually you save fuel by using overdrive thus giving you better gas mileage. You should turn the overdrive ON around 50 mph.
