Before, graduates would throw their caps in the air when they were dismissed from graduation. Now, they can't. Now they only move their tassel to the other side and thats it. WHy did they stop throwing caps in the air?

Yep, what we heard was the lame "you might put an eye out" - thing is, as accidents go, more people have historically tripped over their gown and fallen at graduation than have gotten poked in the eye by flying hats.

go figure....

This looks like a good beginning but you have a lot more to do. The story seems to be moving really quickly maybe you could have Mike Bruno come in at the middle of the year to have it move at a more realistic speed. It also makes Jessica seem a bit pathetic if she is constantly thinking about him for nine years so you could make it seem like she has moved on or at least tries and is probably in a relationship for a couple of years by then and shes beginning to fall for this new guy until that little boy comes into her classroom and he reminds her of him and she begins to question herself and her past decisions and love. Make sure you make it realistic and not all realistic stories end well some do and some don't. Make the story appeal to your readers because if you don't do that then the story will not reach out to anyone and most people won't want to read it. Most of all don't lose your writers voice while trying to appeal to readers and have fun. Hope this helped. Enjoy!!!

Ok for those people that are saying that people with get their eye poked think about this if someone keeps looking up at the sky for where the threw their hats and get their eye poked take their diploma back cause no one should be that stupid.
P.S. Students throw the hat really high when the do throw the hats. So they have plenty of time to look up and not getting poked.

I think it depends on your school. At my undergrad alma mater we would shift our tassels after getting our diplomas during the ceremony. When it ended some people threw their caps, so I guess there wasn't an official policy against it.

at my school they rented all the caps and gowns so the cost would be minimal to the student body
we could not throw the caps so they would not get damaged since we were only renting
i assume at other schools where you purchase the caps and gowns they dont let you throw so people dont get hit with them

The education system has been dumbed down so much in order for schools to meet their quotas for minority graduations that students don't even learn enough to avoid being hit by a thrown cap.

I think it has something to do with the hats coming back down and poking people in the eye.... or maybe because it causes a major disruption during the ceremony.

it's a safety hazard! the caps have really pointy edges, and somebody could lose an eye or get hurt some other way.

Because what goes up must come down...and bop someone in the head or eye which may cause a law suit.

too many people got poked in the eye.

also, many of the caps and gowns are rentals and the rental company doesn't want them to get dirty/destroyed.
