It really is coloring and fashion trend related. I have warm skin coloring and I wear gold, silver just doesn't look right on me. And for the last 10-15 years, silver tones have been predominant in the fashion industry. It is only in this last year that gold has come back in fashion.

no there is no connotation to gold vs. silver. I actually don't look as nice in gold as in silver. I am a winter, and gold and other warm type colors don't look as nice on me. I have very dark hair and pale-ish skin with blue undertone. Which lends itself more to silver than gold.
Though I have a good pair gold hoops that I wear just about as often as my silver ones. Just entirely depends on the outfit I am wearing.

I think it depends on your colouring. I'm blonde and fair so gold looks cheap on me - I wear silver hoops. But darker girls look great in gold hoops.

most people gravitate to the color that look best on them in clothes, makeup and jewelry. gold is considered a warm color and silver is cool. most people have cool coloring, so they tend to prefer silver.

it depends whether you suit warm colours (choose gold) or cold colours (choose silver)
it also depends on your outfit- one colour might go better
