What are the rules regarding an American needing a passport when flying to Canada?

I would like to go to Ottawa, Canada two weeks from now. But, my passport expired.

Am I out of luck?

Yes. You are out of luck. The airlines will not let you on the plane without a valid passport. However if you cross the boarder by land you would be allowed in.

You will be out of luck. You have to have passport in order to fly into Canada. You can see if you can fly into an airport in NY and then drive all you will need is a birth certificate and drivers license.
