I posted a question earlier asking why is accepted to segragate kids in school based on gender, religion and or sexual orientation (in NY we have a gay and lesbian school) but it is not ok to separate based on race. Just about everyone misunderstood the question and thought I was suggesting that we segregate our schools. I was asking why any separation is tolerated......For the people who ranted on how it would be stupid and racist what about Historically black colleges? Thoughts?

I guess this question will be misunderstood also because people do not read the entire post or they just do not understand......In the earlier post a lot of people were saying that to have a black or white school would be racist, I am only asking peoples opinion on HBC's.

Are you saying that Historically Black Colleges are segregated? That's a silly thought. The only reason there WERE HBCUs was because the white schools weren't letting black students in. So instead of just whining about it, they made their own, which makes perfect sense. HBCUs never excluded whites or any other race from their schools. It's "Historically" black not "Exclusively" black.

The people who find that racist need to look up the definition of the word.

I think you are totally misinterpreting the situation here. "Historically black" does not indicate segregation in any way. In fact, there is not a single public college in America that does not accept white people. All "historically black" means is that black people tend to choose to go to those schools, and white people tend to choose not to. It's a choice. You can't MAKE people go to certain schools no more than you can prevent them from going! But they can CHOOSE to go to the one that makes them more comfortable if they want to, i.e. one where people like them tend to go. Having schools for gays and lesbians or based on religion is no different. They are all VOLUNTARY. What can possibly be wrong with CHOOSING to go to a school with people that are similar to you? It's a little thing called "freedom." All that said, most colleges in the United States are "historically white." It is funny to me that people make a stink about "historically black" schools, but never seem to care that most schools are predominantly white. Hmm...

and to add on to DJH's comment, BET is no longer entertainment for Blacks. I just wanted to make that clear.

You should go back and tell your classmates that HBCU's are not racist and they damn sure as he!! do not segregate. HBCU's have a rich history, and if your classmates took the time to pick up a book then they would know this.

People, especially non-Blacks, tend to ASSume that organizations or institutions created by Blacks are *only* created for Blacks. I find that behavior to be very suspicious...it makes wonder if they think that way then they obviously must feel guilty about something. It's almost like they are telling me that I have every reason to create organizations for *only* Black people. Otherwise why would they ASSume?

People bring racism and segregation on themselves half the time and don't even know it.

HBCU's were not created to segregate. Your classmates need to have more respect.

LOL- you're not exactly dealing with the brightest individuals here on Yahoo! Answers, so don't expect them to know the facts- especially facts that render their concocted imaginary false theories on things such as affirmative action, reverse racism, and discrimination claims against minorities totally useless and invalid.

You know, there are some non-African Americans who attend historically black colleges, so I'm not sure why you raise the segregation issue. Anyone can apply.

Historically Balc colleges as well as other things that are ''historically black'' came from the times when Blacks were not allowed to go to ''White colleges/ therefore, Blacks did not pleasurely segregate themselves, we were forced to by not being accepted by normal America culture. That whole historical error set off the chain reaction of blacks having things for themselves to improve ourselves as people.(NAACP,Black colleges,B.E.T, Ebony magazine etc)

It is not right to segregate anyone, however, people self segregate themselves by culture w hat they enjoy, and what type of enviroment and people they interact with in their life.

if we take the main reason why these *****(sorry I'm learning spanish) colleges were created we could use that reason for the induction of these other special group-oriented organizations. you know, being left out so they created their own stuff.

anyway. however, since this trend of not discriminating against anyone has never been strong I think it's time that we are break down this barrier to these all-female, all-black, all-whatever, organizations.

isn't it funny that the PC movement has stumbled upon itself the double standard?
