Who told you this?
When you rented the apartment, did you have to give the landlord a security deposit and last month's rent?
If you paid a security deposit AND the last month's rent upon move in, then you are as good as gold. Your last month's rent was prepaid.
If someone other than the landlord/management told you this and you did not pre pay the last month's rent, they are wrong.
If you only paid a security deposit, it cannot be used as rent. You must pay for rent for the last 30 days.
Failure to do so could lead to an eviction and/or a Small Claims suit aginst you, which will ruin your credit and rental history.

Sweetie, if you were told that you didn't have to pay, why are you arguing it? Regardless, how do you expect us to answer the question, when we can't see your lease/contract? If you're literate enough to write this question, then you are competent enough to read what you should have read before signing it!
There is another possibility: you didn't say how long you lived there. Many long-term renters are allowed to bypass the last month's rent in return for being good tenants (very rare, I'll admit, but it has happened to me!). Conversely, if you were a bad tenant, then they probably just want to get rid of you, and are not willing to risk a (another?) potential bounced check. I'm just saying! ;)

You have to pay through the end of your lease, plain and simple. It's a contract.

You need to look at your lease to find out.
Many apts collect 1st, and last months rent in advance, you might have already paid it, otherwise, NO.

If the apartment complex told you that ...I would say thats its is as good as gold. If a neighbor told you that I would check the the apartments owners.
