I'm purchasing a pack of graphite pencils, and I was wondering what brand other people out there are purchasing. Could you please give me an explanation with your answer? Thank you!

I'm not sure what I've been purchasing. I haven't drawn anything in quite a while, I'm usually on the computer. (sigh) But today I started drawing and I became frustrated with my results so it is back to the drawing board for me!

I like the Kimberly they work well for the drawing I do. I always Use a mechanical pencil to do most of the initial work then use the others for shading and adding different values to the picture I also like a carpenters pencil for doing large areas in less time like leaves and other ground cover......General is a good one too and the Venus depends on the area and what is available.I use F,H,2H, B, 2B, HB, 4B,6B

you will want first an outline pencil which is "HB" and a shading pencil that is at least "2B" if you have those two you can do most drawings al the others are varations of light to dark. I love the 6B because it does awesome dark shading if you do like a dark shadows drawings. There are some drawing pencils that say outline they are HB or close to it. is this what you wanted to know? most pencils if you buy a set will give you information on thier shading or uses.

I used to use the Prang set with HB, 3B, 5B and 6B. A great variety of black to grey coverage, wasting little time building up shaded areas.
