Adding to the first responder's answer, you might consider contacting the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and learn where their Family History Center is located.

Visit it. Warm and helpful people are there to help you find your ancestors. You'd be surprised at what is available there for you.

Google Church of Latter Day Saints/Mormons - their home page has a genealogy link.
It's the best, in my opinion - and it's free, too.

To further respond to your inquiry - when my Mother (German/English-she THOUGHT!) researched our family history for the D.A.R. back in the '70's she literally drove, alone much to my father's dismay, through most of Pennsylvania. She had to go to countless Counties' offices to obtain "proof" we were who we were in order to "qualify" as members. Now - a few hours on the Internet and I can tell you which ship my great-great grandparents each sailed on from Germany to the U.S., one was the last sailing ship, the other was the first steamship - both out of Bremerhaven. I have the manifests and everything. I also have my ancestors' "Mustering Out" paperwork from the Pennsylvania Militia in the Revolution.
The great thing is my Mother and her family always maligned my Father and his Irish Catholicism. When she searched, she couldn't lay a foundation for the guy we KNEW fought in the Revolution (Charles Jennings) - there was a gap somewhere. She found another one, however, who just happened to be an IRISHMAN!! John McDowell of Belfast, Ireland. Came here and once again fought the English for his freedom. So NOW she, and her four sisters as well as the rest of us, owe our Revolutionary Heritage to a Papist!
I guess it really pissed off my Grandfather - the Scottish Mason/Presbyterian.
Go with the LDS Church - you'll get the most from them. It's an amazing database and, contrary to popular belief, it includes all of us - not just Mormons. They'll also respond to personal inquiries.
