It depends on your cycle length. The reason they say it's cycle day 14 is because the average cycle is 28 days long. That's certainly not true for everyone. Your luteal phase (the second 1/2 of your cycle that is after ovulation) is about 14 days for most women. So if you have a 24 day cycle you'd ovulate around cycle day 10; if you have a 35 day cycle you'd ovulate around cycle day 21, etc.

I ovulate 11 days before my period. The time between your ovulation day and your next period is called your luteal phase, and that doesn't vary by much, maybe a day either way.
Your Follicular phase (The time between the day of your first flow until ovulation) can vary by many days, and that is why it is hard for you to know what cycle day you will ovulate on, tho you can get a pretty accurate estimation from charting. Go to http://www.fertilityfriend.com and start charting your cycles. This will really help you get to know your cycles.
I have been charting for going on 5 months now. I have had a short 26 day cycle and a 32 day cycle, and different lengths in between. Here is my page and it has all my charts from the past 5 months http://www.fertilityfriend.com/home/caitiebugsmom05

I normally ovulate on CD 16. Although last cycle was out of whack and did not ovulate until day 18. It will vary on how long your cycle is. For example if your cycle is 35 days, more or less you will ovulate around CD 17 or 18.

I ovulate anywhere from cycle day 17 to cycle day 21 each month. I always checked each month with ovulation test strips since it could vary a few days on any given month for me when i would ovulate. Ovulation test strips were a God send for me!

If you want to know approximately 24 hours before you ovulate, take ovulation predictor tests or get a kit or monitor. You will test your urine every day and it will come up positive approximately 24 hours before ovulation.
It's different for every person, so only follow your own symptoms and ovulation calendar, otherwise you may just be confused.
The average day for ovulation is cd12-16 if you have a 28 day cycle. If your cycle is longer, you can ovulate later. if your cycle is shorter, you can ovulate earlier.

I ovulated somewhere between day 7 and 9. I'm pregnant now so I'm guessing I'm right.
