Basically I am replacing the laptop I am typing this on and when I get the new machine I want to mess about with this old thing. I hear you can overclock CPU's so they run faster then the 'as boxed' speed.
This machine has a Athlon XP 1.8ghz processor with 512mb ram (minus 64mb integrated graphics). Its running XP SP2.
Pointers to any websites, personal experiences etc would be great.

It doesnt really matter if I mess this machine up and I am just testing the principles.
Thankyou.

i agree with the others who answered all you'll accomplish is to trash a laptop that is working now. as far as testing the principles why not just google overclocking and i'm sure you'll get all the info you have time to read.

Can't see why you should want to do this. It is possible if your motherboard can cope with it. Try joining www.driverguide.com for the general principles. Bear in mind though that you can have the best processor in the world, but if your motherboard and per se graphics chip, audio chip etc aren't up to it then the results will be negligable. If you want to learn about "overclocking", get yourself an old PC and start to play with that. People have given me "old stuff" like a dual Pentium from about 2002 i.e. 5 years old. It's the fastest computer in the house. Well "overclocked". I could use it as a server in my house. Unfortunately I would need to use several heavy duty fans to cool it down and walk around with ear-muffs on! Laptop? Forget it. Try it on an old PC first and then you start to understand the problems.

personal experience says its almost never worth the effort and there will be minimal gains if a machine isnt built from the ground up to be overclocked .. overclocking a laptop is pointless imo .. the big limitation in a laptop is the harddrive speed .. put a faster one in it if u want real gains ..

Overclocking on a laptop is not gonna happen, they aren't made for that, the motherboard on it will probbaly not let you overclock anything, but good luck.

that is a bad idea as it may make your laptop slower or it may overheat to much which would cause it break.
