I grew up a dodger fan in LA. I know this sounds strange, but started cheering for the Yankees mid 80's. I still live in LA but cheer for the Yanks.
My favorite player was Don Mattingly. I thought Joe Torre did a great job and was hoping Donnie B would become manager of the Yanks. But if Joe T gets the job with the Dodgers and brings Don to LA, I might start cheering again for the Dodgers. Yankees would still be #1, but Dodgers might be strong #2. Any thoughts?

From a long time Dodgers fan I would like you to reconsider your rankings, How about the Dodgers #1 and the Yankees #2 if Torre and Mattingly both come?

You're answering a question that I just posted yesterday about people rooting for certain teams and certain players. Check my question when you get a chance.

To answer your question, I was born in Brooklyn when the Dodgers were part of the neighborhood. I was very young so I don't really remember. When they moved to LA, I became a Yankee fan and have been one ever since. With Joe Torre, Donny Baseball and maybe several others joining the team, it will give me a legitimate reason to cheer for the Dodgers.

The Steinbrenners have made it very difficult to believe in that franchise anymore.

Fan loyalty is good and respectable and admirable and all, but do what you want. Who cares? You'll probably be quietly pulling for them anyway if you don't become a fan so what's the difference. I think there is too much emphasis on fan loyalty. Is your team loyal to you? Do they care what you, the individual thinks? No! They care about money and in some cases organizational pride. So being a loyal fan is a one sided relationship. So, why not just place your rooting interest wherever you want it. Plus, it's not even like you're "done with the Yankees." You just found another team you want to pull for in addition to them. What's wrong with that? What does it even mean? Are you cheating on the Yankees by watching some Dodger games or following them in the standings? Buying a hat or jersey? Life's too short for weird, intangible restrictions.

my loyalty to the blue is unconditional but if you like the Yankees and the Dodgers most die hard Dodger fans won't have a problem with it as long as you don't bring it up.

very stable question. greater followers? possibly the Yankees, in spite of the actuality that that's amazingly close. greater celeb followers? possibly L.A. each Lakers pastime has a number of celebrities at it. greater iconic? notably even. The Yankees have a ton of history relationship back to the early 1900s, however the Lakers have been the elite franchise in activities over the final 60 years.

If they do go to LA, I will watch and root for them too, especially since most of their games start at 10-10:30, right after the Yanks finish..

what about fan loyalty? I don't know - I love the Indians and to me, there is no #2, everyone else is just fringe details.

It's always good to have 1 favorite team in each league.

Why would I have loyalty to 2 MLB clubs? I would look like my neighbors, who are more loyal to their country down south than to the U.S. Down south is their #1, U.S. is a distant 2nd.
