I pull weeds.

My only challenge is that my dogs love to help Mom "diggy diggy" in the gardens. However, they don't know the difference between a weed and a flower or plant. *sigh*

But they more than make up for it by knowing that "varmits" don't belong in Mom's gardens. My dogs work hard on the farm to keep the pests out.

So in exchange for their occassional lapse in judgement (by digging up a carrot seedling or two), they repay me by keeping the deer out of my tulips, the crows out of my corn (for the most part), the woodchucks out of my squash, the chipmunks out of my tomatoes, the field mice away from my lettuce, the rabbits away from my carrots, etc...

I pull them as well, but if you don't like re-doing that, place 4-7 layers of newspaper on top of them between the "real" plants you like and cover with mulch. The newspaper will break down and improve the soil and you won't have to keep re-weeding the area!

Since most vegetation reproduces by some form of flowering, you are correct, they are flowers.

Weeds are native vegetation, that are hardy, and take less fertilizer and water, than the non-native vegetation introduced by humans to alter their environment. In the future as water and energy grow more scarce, we will need to begin looking at native vegetation with more respect, since it is a durable part of our ecosystem. It takes less water and fertilizer to grow native vegetation, and it results in less contaminated run-off water that harms streams and aquatic life.

Just think of yourself as a free and independent thinker, years ahead of your time in respect for the native vegetation.
