Let me expand on your thoughts, and say that literacy is losing its relevance today. Computers do everything, who the heck needs to know how to even spell any more?

It might be true that you need fewer people proficient in math, but the math, itself, hasn't lost relevancy. You still need someone to program the computers.

You could also find numerous examples where 'cargo cult' training (memorize a sequence of steps with almost no understanding of what the steps mean) can cause extremely bad results. Sooner or later, someone inputs the data wrong and it would sure be nice if at least one or two people could look at the results that were spit out and realize the results were total garbage.

The statement is false. Computers don't think, they just do what they'vebeen programmed for.

Mathematics will lose relevance only when it's not necessary to think anymore.
