Okay, My taurus is having problems overheating. It has had a thermostat put in it, it has antifreeze in it, when you are driving it it is fine, but when ur setting still for a while, it almost goes up to the red, and u can smell antifreeze real bad, but ITS NOT boiling. And the heat doesn't work worth a crap, but the engine is hot, cause its overheating, what could be that cause?? thanx

Could be any of the following. Check each.

Hole in Radiator or hoses
Water pump
Thermostat (sometimes new ones are bad)
Not enough antifreeze or mixed wrong
Heater coil gone bad

You describe your problem very well. First of all it sounds as if your heater core is plugged and or leaking.

Second have your cooling system pressure checked. It should hold the pressure stamped on the radiator cap overnight. If it passad this test do the following:

You can make a decission and do one of two things. Have your cooling system cleaned with a two part granular acid and neutrializer. This is the most aggressive way to clean a cooling system. Or bite (I would do this) the bullet and slap in a new radiator. Today standard radiators are so flimsy ten years is nearing it's natural death.

Third, a mechanic can tell if there's coolant circulation going through your heater core by holding the heater hoses with the motor running. If the coolant is circulating properly, both hoses will be the same temperature. If not the supply hose will be hot and the return unfortunately will be much cooler. If this is the case a new heater core is necessary.

It sounds like a problem I had with my 1992 Taurus. If you have the 3.8L engine, you could possibly have a blown head gasket, which will lead to those symptoms. I had it happen in the middle of winter, and not having the heat really sucked.

Don't quote me on that, but I do know that Ford had a heck of a problem with the head gaskets blowing on the 3.8L engines in the Taurus and the Aerostar.

If your raise the hood with the car parked, idling and the parking brake on, you should hear the electric radiator cooling fan come on periodically to cool the radiator. But you need to find the coolant leak. If there's no visible wetness anywhere, it could be your water pump is leaking. Your heater core is likely clogged and needs replacing ($500 job).

There was a TSB,or Technical Service Bulletin, number 01-11-6 dated 06/11/01 addressing this problem.Since this is out of the service range,I would definately take the vehicle to a service center. It sounds like a bad water pump, and if it is,go with a qaulity pump AND serpentine belt.It also would not be a bad idea to have a service tech. look at the cylinder heads.Good luck.

Tauruses are really agressive sometimes. It has something to do with the stars they're born under, if you clear that out, then I can help you lots more.
Best of luck,

I sure it's your water pump. You should change that ASAP, and check for coolant leaks.
