U.S. power is 110v. The item (if not dual voltage) is rated for only 110v. Merely changing the plug will burn up the item. You need to get a voltage converter (transformer).

Standard is 110-115 volts. No there is NO way to convert a 110 volt outlet to a 220 volt outlet. You will need to run new wire and install a new outlet if you need 220V.

120 volt 15 or 20 amp. No, there is no way to convert it to 240 volts and comply with the electric code and be safe. You need to have an entire new circuit installed.

Usually you are talking about at least a 110v. line. If you want to change it to a 220 line you have to re-wire with the appropriate wire and outlet. You can get both the wire and the outlet from any good hardware store (Lowe's and home depot to name two). You do have to make sure that you attach them to the correct breaker as well. If you don't know what you are doing please hire a professional!!! You need to know all the current electrical codes for your area before you start. You also need to know if you have the breaker space. Electricity and wiring is not something you want to mess around with if you don't know what you are doing, not only could you hurt yourself, you could burn down your house, fry whatever you have on that line, you could also damage your breaker box etc.....

LOTSA BullS**t here.
U.S. Residential Utility Voltage systems are
120/208V. (Urban), or 120/240V. (Rural).
depending on where you live.
There is no "220V." in the U.S. - it's a misnomer.
A standard outlet will always be 120V.
Special 208 or 240V. outlets will have different
plug configurations.
It is unlikely that you can just pick any outlet and
"convert" it to "220".
If the outlet is on its own circuit, and wired direct
to the panel, and if there is a spare space in the
panel, an electrician can reconnect it at 208 or
240V. (depending on where you are), and install
the appropriate outlet for you, but the chances of
any given outlet meeting the above conditions are slim..

The standard U.S. electrical plug is 110v. Many household items, including the kitchen range and water heater, use 220v, or, basically 110v twice. In other words, 2-110v connections can become 220v.
However, if you are not at least basically knowledgeable about electrical products, don't try it yourself.
There is more to it than just turning off the electricity, but of course that is where to start.
