Avast as advised above is an excellent free antivirus, but that's not your problem. (Here's the link for Avast anyhow):
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
What is causing those "system alerts" is most probably a smitfraud infection, worry about solving that first. Superantispyware removes *many* smitfraud variants, so try Superantispyware first. If Superanti... doesn't do it , then run the smitfraudfix.
Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/
Smitfraudfix: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php
You can solve this for free, don't go buying anything!
Edit: The person who said that Avast has lots of spam (?) doesn't know what she's talking about.

Most of the sites you went to probably installed viruses. If you don't already have antivirus installed, you won't get system alerts telling you you have a virus. The message is either adware or a virus that you acquired, extorting you for the fix. Clicking on that message, which doesn't even look like it came from Windows in the first place, probably just takes you to the extortionist's website. For $25 they will remove the crap they put on your computer... for a while... once. Try adaware from Lavasoft, and Spybot: Search and Destroy. Safe downloads for the latter are obtainable from cnet.com and I think safer-networking.org

1.) If you have XP, make sure you have service pack 2. http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/370
2.) If you can't afford an anti-virus scanner. Try running Spybot:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
This will delete running processes that are maliceous. Your Systems alert every 2 minutes are due to running programs.
3.) Run ad-aware. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
This won't solve your problem but it will protect your privacy.
4.) Okay, if that doesn't work, you can look at your running processes, research every one, and delete the processes that shouldn't be on your computer. If that doesn't make sense or you don't know what a processes, I wouldn't suggest taking that path.

Go to www.download.com and you can get AVG antivirus or Avast which will be free and will remove any virus it finds and it works great!
I would download a couple of antispyware as well just in case it is spyware, Spybot and A-squared work great. These all work and are not trials!

Be very careful with avast! It has a lot of spam that is very hard to get out. try going to your local walmart and picking up an anti virus protection. It should cost you around $10.00-30.00 depending on the brand. and you can use cash there :D
