it is a word that does not fit in with the time period of the writing as a whole. For example if i were writing a story about medieval Britain and started mentioning mobile phones and internet these words would be anachronisms because they do not fit in with the era.

The word is anachronism, meaning anomoly out of time.

We think we know from history what reality was like in various time periods, so suppose archeologists are digging up some ancient site & they come across modern technology, then this should tell them that the site has been contaminated, or they were incredibly careless, or a time traveler must have got there.

Or suppose a painting is being authenticated, and they find where some alleged painter 200 years ago was using pigments that were invented 50 years ago. They would probably decide that the painting was a forgery, because those pigments were not available to the 200 years ago artist.

it means something out or its time era, such as a wrist watch on a medieval person in a film, something that wouldn't have been invented at that time, mainly found in historical books, films, plays etc, lt could be language or ideas which is often shown, women being free and liberated in times this would just not have been possible, would be an anachronism, maybe the doll was styled from a certain era but had modern accessories.

An anachronism (from the Greek "ανά," "against," and "χρόνος," "time") is anything that is temporally incongruous—that is, it appears in a temporal context in which it seems sufficiently out of place as to be peculiar, incomprehensible or impossible. The item is often an object, but may be a verbal expression, a technology, a philosophical idea, a musical style, a material, a custom, or anything else closely enough bound to a particular period as to seem odd outside it.

Something that is misplaced in time, in the wrong historical context. George Bernard Shaw used anachronism freely, for example Cleopatra quotes Shelley in one of his plays, when Shelley was an English poet who lived thousands of years later and Cleo had obviously really never heard of him.

Shakespeare also commits involuntary anachronism in Julius Caeser, when they speak of the "clock on the tower" (no clocks in Roman times) and in the battle scene when someone yells "Fire!" (no cannon or firearms, either.)

an anachronism is when something is used, in a story for example, where it is completely out of place and time, for example if you wrote a story about the Tudor period and introduced spaceships or TVs. I don't know Greek but think it comes from that language, I know the chrono bit means time and I think the an at the beginning means not, but I may not be correct though I am correct in the example I give
