How many days do I need for the Grand Canyon? I am not interested in going down it on a donkey, or in white-water rafting, or in any other outdoor activities. I just want to see and photograph it from various viewing points. How much time for the painted desert and the petrified forest?

If you don't plan to go down the trails into the Canyon at all, you may be happy spending just a day or two. Be sure to include a drive along the east rim, which you can do on your way to Flagstaff. Then allow another day for the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. You may also have time to visit Meteor Crater the same day. Other places I recommend in Northern Arizona are: Wupatki & Sunset Crater National Momuments. Also, Walnut Canyon, which is a personal favorite of mine. In Flagstaff I recomend seeing the Museum of Northern Arizona, and also Lowell Observatory which is where Pluto was discovered. Sedona is about 30 miles from Flagstaff, and a jeep tour there could be fun. All are great locations for getting some wonderful pictures. In the other direction, if you want to go up into Utah, there's spectacular scenery there as well. Just keep in mind that there can be snow in No. AZ & UT in April. Then again, there could be spring-like weather! It's a good idea to check the weather before you depart, and pack layers so that you can adjust with the weater. Also, be sure to take plenty of water with you each day. Even though you don't plan to be hiking, it's dry, and you'll likely find that you get thirsty easily.

Note: If you like trains consider taken the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon. Also, there's a lovely scenic railway, The Verde Canyon Railway in Clarkdale, AZ.

Your "going down the Grand Canyon on a donkey" comment gave me a laugh. The Grand Canyon is so big, but honestly, 3 weeks at the Grand Canyon is a long time. Don't get me wrong, it's so beautiful, and you're going to get some amazing photos. If you have time, try and go see the Sonoran Desert
http://www.phoenix-hotel.bz/phoenix-attractions.php it's really pretty.

And if you really want some amazing photos, you need to take a hot-air balloon ride, talk about some great photos, those photos will be like none other. And don't forget about the zoo.

You have so many options with 'day trip and tours' try here,

Three weeks would be plenty of time. If you just planning on seeing the Grand Canyon from the surface, you can do that from a variety of points in a couple days easily. It depends on whether you are wanting to view from north rim or south rim, but your time frame will allow for both. I've done day trips from Phoenix up to the south rim for a viewing and dinner at sunset, etc.

Spending three weeks in northern AZ for the GC, Sedona, the painted desert, Oak Creek Canyon, Sunset Crater and so on will allow for a leisurely visit to all locations. Its easy driving on open roads and somewhat baron between locations so I would think that 3 weeks would be plenty of time to see what you want to see and not feel rushed.

All can probably be accomplish one 1-2 days. Also go to meteor crater, Lake Havasu City (for the London Bridge), Prescott, Payson /Show Low (for the lakes and outdoor activites), Lost Dutchman's State Park, go see the Missions in southern AZ, tour Chase Field, hike one of the main mountains in Phoenix and enjoy the city lights. There is tons to do with three weeks time!
