Just heard a commercial on the radio saying that "The Eagles" are America's greatest band. I wasn't sure that I agreed with this so I started thinking. "The Beatles", "The Rolling Stones", and "Led Zepplin" are all great bands but they are English. "U2" is from Ireland. My favorite band "Rush" is from Canada. I would consider all the above mentioend groups to better then "The Eagles".

So who is the best US band? Our to put it more precisicely who is the best US Rock band. I am thinking maybe Bruce Sprintseen and the E-Street Band. Let me know what you think.

It depends on what you mean by greatest. If it's record sales, then quite possibly it could be the Eagles or Aerosmith.
Here's some others that I feel should be mentioned when speaking of popular American Bands-

Grand Funk Railroad
Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa)
Captain Beefheart
The Byrds
Boston
James Gang
Joe Walsh
Jefferson Airplane
Johnny Winter
Edgar Winter
Dead Boys
Grateful Dead
Styx
CCR
Eddy Money
Iron Butterfly
Warren Zevon
The Stooges (Iggy Pop)
Bob Dylan
Alice Cooper
Paul Revere and the Raiders
ZZ- Top
Steely Dan
New York Dolls
Sly and the Family Stone
Funkadelic
Chicago
Mountain (Corky Laing is Canadian)
Buffalo Springfield (Neil Young is Canadian)
Crosby Stills Nash & Young (Graham is English, Neil is Canadian)
Blue Cheer
Steve Miller
Boz Scags
Ted Nugent / Amboy Dukes
The Band (Robbie Robertson is Canadian)
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Blackfoot
The Good Rats
Frijid Pink
MC5
Cactus
Vanilla Fudge
Spirit
Jo Jo Gunne
The Beach Boys
The Ramones
The Doors
Jimi Hendrix

There's also tons of lesser known, but equally great American bands like;
Granicus
Caine
Crow
Blood Rock
Happy the Man
Tin House
Peace and Quiet
Dragonfly
Axis
Boomerang
Claw
SRC

Edit - BoosGrammy - 'Deep Purple' were British, and 'The Little River Band' were Australian. Nice list though!

Edit - HoosierBadger - Fleetwood Mac were British, (until 7 years and 14 albums into their career, then Buckingham & Nicks joined, they were American).

THAT is funny.....I just read a hilarious riff in the newest bio of Gram Parsons about why the Eagles are the worst band in the world ("Twenty Thousand Roads: The Ballad of Gram Parsons and His Cosmic American Music," by David N. Meyer: wait for the paperback edition, is my opinion).

I almost want to say The Ramones because they saved America from overblown stadium rock, which is what the Eagles are. IMHO.

But when I think about bands which have not only aged well but have tried a lot of new things, I have to agree that Aerosmith qualifies. I don't like rap but I love their collaboration with Run-DMC, and Joe Perry is one of the best American guitarists living.

The Boss is great, but he's done so much solo work I wonder if you can even call him a band per se, just like Neil Young and his off again-on again band Crazy Horse.

Nirvana and Credence Clearwater could qualify too, but these bands are no more (RIP) and I assume this contest is about longevity as well: otherwise we could spin a list late into the night......

The Eagles 1976 Greatest Hits LP is the biggest selling album of all time, but I'm not sure that would make them the greatest. Grand Funk Railroad had more commercial success than any other US band back in the 60's and 70's, and Creedence Clearwater Revival was the #1 band in America at the peak of the British invasion. There seems to be no criteria for "The Best Band in America. All mentioned by everyone else have their claim to fame. I think the artist's should make their choice, but I believe they would have just as much problems as we do. I like all types of music too much to say one band is the best U.S. band.

Great question. I'm torn between Aerosmith, The Ramones and Nirvana, and would probably nod to Aerosmith for longevity. My personal favorites would be Grateful Dead, REM, Fleetwood Mac, Doors and Allman Brothers Band. Okay, and I'll admit, I'm a closet Journey fan, what can I say. I have a hard time accepting The Eagles because, while great, I don't think they really inspired future bands. How many rock musicians say they got into the business after hearing The Eagles?

The diverse and breathtaking geography, the openness of it's hard working and racially diverse people, a Bill of Rights that recognizes the inalienable rights of Man, a model of government that has been set as a model for the rest of the world and a legacy of self-reliance, innovation and personal freedom that used to be the envy of the world.

I like the Beach Boys best. Chuck Berry too, but he's fom the 50's mainly and not really a band either.

I think Elvis or Bob Dylan are considered the greatest artists of the U.S., but they're not bands.

Heart with such songs as:
Crazy on You, Barracuda, Alone, Allies, Dog and Butterfly, City's Burning etc. They had no trouble going from near punk, to blues to jazz rock fusion.
