Has your transmission been serviced at regular intervals?
If you've got a lot 50,000 miles or more on the trans fluid I would have it drained the filter changed and the pan cleaned. I wouldn't have it flushed. Reason being if any of the pressurized stray material loges into the small springs, check-balls, passages and valves erratic or no shifting may result.
I've stuck my nose into two transmission shops in town and neither of them do it. When I asked why, the only answer I got was: It isn't necessary.
If you were a person who religiously had it flushed every year or 12,0000 miles you could go for it although it would be a rather extravagant expense.

It has been known to happen, and there are theories all over the place as to why it happens.
If the transmissions is well maintained, a transmission flush is not likely to be the cause of making it fail, (and the transmission should be serviced at a minimum of once each year).

if the transmission has not been flushed before and the mileage is above the 100s then there is a better chance of it doing so. but if the fluid has been changed at the regular intervals, been flushed before, and still has a lot of miles, then there is a smaller chance of this happening. basically maintain your transmission like you would do your engine.
