Add 9 and subtract 2x from both sides

12 = 2x

Divide through by 2 to get x alone

6 =x

Check:

2(6) + 3 = 4(6) -9
12 + 3 = 24 - 9
15 = 15

x=6.

I'll show you how:
2x + 3 = 4x - 9
using the substitution property of equality, add 9 to each side:
2x + 3 (+9) = 4x -9 (+9)
simplify: 2x + 12 = 4x.
using the subtraction property of equality, subtract 2x from each side:
2x (-2x) + 12 = 4x (-2x)
simplify: 12 = 2x
using the division property of equality, divide each side by two:
12 ÷ 2 = 2x ÷ 2
simplify: 6 = x

hope that helped!

It's a single variable problem so why would anybody need help with that? For the good of humanity, and your education, I do say you need to do this one on your own and not get others to do your homework for you.

I'll give you a hint. If your teacher didn't explain it very well or your textbook. Take a side of the equation, any side will do and elimate first either the 2 or the 4 that is mutliplied by x by dividing it out, then get rid of any addition or subtraction that remains by adding or subtracting the inverse. What is left should be x= ? and that's your answer. All you are trying to do here is add, subtract, multiply or divide (as long as it's done to BOTH sides of the equation at the same time.

See an easier problem solved.. 2y=8
I want to know y.

So I divide both sides by 2 to get rid of that stupid 2 that's attacking my y! and I get

y= 4! Voila! Ain't that hard?

2x+3=4x-9
or 2x - 4x = -9 - 3 (by transposition)
or - 2x = - 12
or x = 6 ( by dividing by - 6)

2x-4x=-9-3
-2x=-12
x=-12/-2
x=6

Get all the x on one side and the numbers on the other side of the = sign. Remember to change +/- when moving sides and then solve for x

2x+3=4x-9
2x+3-3=4x-9-3
2x=4x-12
2x-4x=4x-4x-12
-2x=-12
=2x/-2=-12/-2
x=6
